Cognition and technology

Cognition et technologie

François Jouen, Director of Studies, will give a lecture entitled Cognition and Technology, as part of the cycle of conferences and the 150th year anniversary of the EPHE. The lecture has been organized under the high patronage of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.

To begin his lecture, François Jouen will revisit the definition of human cognition. He aims to show how classical definitions are unsuited to the understanding of artificial cognition in order to propose a "minimalist" definition. Two corollaries that follow from this definition will be used to conceive cognition as "incarnate and situated". In a second time, François Jouen will defend the idea that technology is associated with cognition since the beginning of humanity, but that this relationship is not univocal. Indeed, if technology depends on our cognition, our cognition also depends on technology. The conference will end with a presentation of the major stakes of the ongoing digital revolution.
