The many colors of nanometric gold

Conférence expérimentale

A current research theme presented live by researchers in support of experiments during the experimental conferences organized by the ESPGG (Espace Pierre Gilles de Gennes)

What if gold wasn't always yellow? Without knowing it, the master glassmakers were already shaping gold into nanoparticles to make intense ruby red color.

Thanks to chemistry experiments, Nicolas Lequeux, Thomas Pons and Manon Debayle (Laboratoire de Physique et d'Etudes des Matériaux, ESPCI Paris) will show, during this experimental conference, that by changing the size and shape of gold particles, it is possible to make them take on various shades, thanks to an effect called plasmon resonance.

Beyond the pleasure of the eyes, this phenomenon has applications in medicine and photonics.

The Espace des Sciences Pierre-Gilles de Gennes is the place for engagement with the public at ESPCI Paris and Université PSL.
