Postponed - Conference: "Grievances. Political complaints from the XIIIth century to the French Revolution"

Between the revolution of government in the thirteenth century and the revolution of citizenship in the eighteenth century, the grievance, or political complaint, was a means of regulating the relationship between the governed and the rulers. Although the history of other forms of requests is well known, the petition for example, the history of the grievances has yet to be explored. This book tracks the first milestones, based on a documentary survey of European dimensions aimed at determining the identity of the grievance. The complexity of the supposed origins of the "grievances books" emerges, whose memory has been revived in France by the recent Great National Debate and the "City Halls books". Through contributions from historians specializing in political and social issues, as well as legal historians, the book deliberately focuses on the sources that make it possible to express and therefore to know about grievances, whether they are supplications, petitions, memoirs, handwritten bills, synthetic notebooks, placets or printed collections. Particular attention is also paid to the internal system of these media, and notably to the language and vocabulary used. These cross approaches allow us to understand the grievances as a historical object in its own right.
