Nicolas Schaub, doctor in contemporary art history, will debate with Jacques Frémeaux, professor emeritus at Sorbonne University, about his book Représenter l'Algérie. Images et conquête au XIXe siècle (Representing Algeria. Images and conquest in the 19th century), published by CTHS in 2015.
France's military and political conquest of Algeria stimulates an artistic production that has shaped our vision of this territory. Understanding the genesis of these representations requires that we grasp the complex relationships between the political authority, which imposes the new colonial framework in Algeria, and the artists recruited alongside the military. It is in this context that the creations that nourish the Western fascination for this fantasized East will be born. Written exchanges, battle stories, sketches taken from the field or major paintings such as those of Vernet or Isabey, this book reveals works that shed new light on this brutal war that lasted from 1830 to 1847.
