Writings in contact. Practices and interferences

As much as languages, writings are naturally in contact with one another. Within the same community of users, as on the same document or inscription, several writings or graphic styles of the same writing are often mobilized, in accordance with shared, culturally codified language registers, or according to the specific requirements of the writers. In both cases, the parameters at stake are diverse: functional hierarchization of information, expression of cultural hierarchies or authority, aesthetic or playful dimensions. Like languages, writing and graphic styles are likely to interfere with one another. From a formal point of view, writers educated in writing can, by memory of the gesture, present a "graphic accent" when they practice others. The symposium aims to focus on the practices and phenomena of co-presence and interference between different writings or graphic styles, from a perspective that will highlight the sociological, contextual, functional and cognitive dimensions involved. In order to better reflect the great diversity of the phenomena at stake, the contributions will represent a deliberately broad cultural and historical horizon, from the Far East to the Mediterranean worlds, from the first written cultures to recent times.
