Occupation de la porte de Brandebourg (1989) / Combattants moudjahidines dans la province afghane de Kounar (1987)

Lecture by Gilles Kepel, Director of the chaire Moyen-Orient Méditerranée at the École normale supérieure, and Jacques Rupnik, Research Director at Sciences Po.

What can a political scientist specializing in Islam and an international relations historian who has devoted most of his research to Central Europe talk about? If it is Gilles Kepel and Jacques Rupnik, it is likely that the conversation will quickly shift to the Czech origins they share, which have left them with the devastating humour of the Mitteleuropa.

During their debate, the two academics met their visions of the events of 1989. This unprecedented analysis to a pivotal year has allowed them to forge a useful conceptual method to grasp the world in 2019. The Revue des Deux Mondes revisits with them the hopes raised by what seemed to be the triumph of liberal democracy as well as the threats stemming from other events of this crazy year, in an interview to be published on December 4. It is what the two authors will discuss at the lecture at the École nationale des chartes.
