Sound and music at the heart of sound studies

The second stage of a debate between Columbia University (New York) and Université PSL (Paris), this international symposium will bring together researchers to assess the fundamental questioning of the categories of sound, noise and music, and to question their theoretical and disciplinary consequences.

Organized by the CRAL (Centre de recherches sur les arts et le langage), the symposium will last three days.

The first session will be devoted to the political implications of sound. The second day will begin with a reflection on sound art, then on the place of sound in the philosophy and epistemology of music. The last debate will focus on the approaches of geography and sound archaeology. Then, on the third and last day of this symposium, we will discuss the roots of sound in the history of the 19th century, and the political and scientific consequences of its recording technologies. The intersection between musicology and sound studies will then be studied from the point of view of political science, through the study of French demonstrations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The last panel will allow us to deepen the relationships between sound, philology and anthropology, then it will be time to ask the question at the root of this meeting: how do sound studies analyze the sound and music?
With Karin Bijsterveld, Lydia Goehr and Brian Kane as keynotes, these seven panels will cover a wide range of sound research.

The public will also be invited to discover Pieter Kiefer's installation Looking at Gravel (EHESS 54 bd Raspail, 75006 Paris) from January 20 to 25, 2019, and to attend a free concert hosted by Reid Hall.
