SACRe doctoral students at Harvard

Harvard University’s Dean of Arts and Humanities extended an invitation to the SACRe laboratory (Sciences, Arts, Creation, Research) to cross the Atlantic in order to discuss the relations between artistic creation and research and the interactions between arts and sciences. A seminar was held at Harvard on October 26th.

Les étudiants SACRe à Harvard

During the Harvard Worldwide Week on October 26th, students from the SACRe doctoral program (Sciences, Arts, Creation, Research) from PSL and PhD students from the Harvard Critical Media Practice program met at a seminar entitled "Art as Research: A Transatlantic Dialogue".

Four SACRe students, from La Fémis, EnsAD, and ENS made the trip accompanied by Edouard Husson, vice president of PSL. The presentation of their work allowed for a collaborative discussion with students and teachers of Harvard on topics such as the video-test, the multimedia installation, and the treatment of the image (existing or realized), which questioned the relations between the image and the production of knowledge.

These questions form the heart of the issues driving SACRe laboratory. SACRe’s objective is to explore and experiment with the diverse relationships between creation and research, and between arts and sciences. Important questions include: What is research by practice, how do we implement it? What are the means of associating it with theoretical research? What are the tools, instruments, approaches and methods of documentation that define artistic and / or scientific research?

The day ended with a collective discussion between PSL and Harvard faculty members about possible ways of integrating art research into the university. The unique and atypical nature of the SACRe laboratory is a model in this field; the day ended with a mutual desire to renew sharing and exchange opportunities in the near future.

SACRe (Sciences, Arts, Creation, Research) is a laboratory and an interdisciplinary doctoral program of PSL dedicated to creators and supported by the five great schools of art and creation of PSL and the ENS: the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique (CNSAD, professional acting school), the Conservatoire national supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (professional training in  music, dance, and sound technologies), Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (EnsAD-Paris, artistic, scientific, and technical training for artists and designers), Beaux-Arts de Paris (artistic creation), La Fémis (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Métiers de l’Image et du Son, the French national film school).
