Are you getting ready for your new adventure at PSL? Don’t panic! Here are 6 simple tips to help you find your bearings and quickly settle into your new university life.

#1: Make sure you’ve got all the essentials

For a successful academic year, it’s important to have everything you need at hand: make sure your laptop or notebooks are ready, and that you have activated your public transport (or Vélib’) pass. Your student ID card will give you access to various resources like the university libraries and the student cafeteria, and it also entitles you to discounts at museums, movie theaters, and even certain stores.

You will also be given an academic email address and access to your school’s Wi-Fi.

#2: Get to know the campus

The first thing to do when you arrive is to take the time to explore your surroundings. PSL is a university made up of several schools, and each one has its own buildings and facilities.

To avoid getting lost on your first days, locate the classrooms and lecture halls where your courses will take place, the libraries where you can go and study, as well as the coworking spaces, student cafeterias, and relaxation areas to unwind between classes.

Some of the schools have their own special mobile apps to help you find your way and access their services. Check to see if yours has one! For example, at Dauphine, we use My.Dauphine.

#3: Get ready to socialize

The first few weeks at university are the best time to make friends and build connections, even if it might feel a bit intimidating at first. Breaks between classes, meals at the cafeteria, or informal moments like coffee breaks are perfect opportunities to start up conversations with your classmates.

Make sure you take part in events organized by the Student Union (BDE) or by L’Union, the shared student union across all PSL schools, especially their orientation events, which are specifically designed to help new students get to know each other in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

#4: Get your bearings at the university

Settling into a new university can sometimes feel intimidating, but don’t worry To get off to a good start, it’s important to take the time to understand how your school works. Find out about the administrative services, learn how to use the online course platforms so you don’t miss any content, and attend the information sessions held at the beginning of the year, as they are a great way to learn about academic expectations and the resources available.

Finally, follow your school and PSL on social media to stay up to date with important events and opportunities you won’t want to miss.

#5: Build your network

Good communication is key to a successful year. From the very beginning, make sure you save the contact details of important people at PSL (such as the academic office, professors, etc.). You can also exchange contact info with your classmates, and creating or joining a WhatsApp group with other students can be very helpful for sharing course information, organizing study sessions, or asking practical questions.

#6: Make the most of your free time

At PSL, student life isn’t just about classes. Take advantage of your free time to explore the many activities offered by the university. Whether you choose PSL Sport or the PSL Orchestra and Choir, you can relax or stay fit and meet new people at the same time.

Student clubs and associations are also a great way to pursue your passions or get involved in causes you care about. Whether you’re interested in humanitarian, artistic, or scientific initiatives, there’s something for everyone. You’ll have a chance to find out about them all at AGORA, the student association fair. Getting involved in these extracurricular activities will help you integrate more easily and find a healthy balance between study and leisure.

And remember, you’re not the only one who’s new and a bit nervous. You might make mistakes, but everyone is in the same boat. You’ll discover and learn together in this new university adventure.

So, feeling ready and reassured? 😊
