Supporting the scientific activity of young researchers: five winners of the Junior Fellows call for proposals 2022
PSL continues to support promising young researchers with the Junior Fellows call for proposals 2022, launched in January 2022. The cross-disciplinary committee met on 13 June and selected five winners. All will be awarded funding of €150,000.
The aim of this award is to offer support to high-potential young researchers to assist them in developing their own scientific activity and in advancing their scientific careers. PSL hopes that this support will act as a catalyst to propel the careers of those researchers selected and will enable them to obtain further funding, such as ERC grants, and lead to tenure, for those who do not yet have a permanent position.
The call was launched in January 2022 and offered five positions. It was open to researchers from outside PSL who obtained their PhD within the last 7 years, and to permanent or contractual researchers in PSL component schools or researchers with tenure at research bodies within the PSL ecosystem, hired within the last 2 years at the time they submitted their application.
The cross-disciplinary jury, which met on 13 June, selected five winners. All will be awarded funding of €150,000.
The jury was keen to emphasize the excellent quality of all the applications submitted and encouraged all young researchers, whether or not they were selected for this call for proposals, as they embark on their career.

Environmental Sciences
After a PhD at James Cooke University, Australia, Renato Morais is currently a post-doctoral fellow at CRIOBE and holder of a Branco Weiss Fellowship grant. Renato Morais has developed a multidisciplinary approach for a better understanding of the reasons for high animal biomass productivity in coral reefs.
Kong Ooi TAN, LBM laboratory, ENS-PSL
Chemistry
Kong Ooi Tan joined ENS-PSL through the Junior Professor scheme in 2020, after a postdoctoral position at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States). It is Kong Ooi Tan’s intention to develop ultra-low temperature and high magnetic field spectroscopy instruments to perform static DNP (Dynamic Nuclear Polarization)-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) experiments.
Anne-Cécile BOULAY, CIRB laboratory, Collège de France
Life Sciences
Anne-Cécile Boulay, research fellow at INSERM, joined the CIRB team studying the Physiology and Physiopathology of the gliovascular unit in 2020. The aim of her project is to explore the interface between blood vessels and astrocytes in the brain. She was awarded the L'Oréal-UNESCO Young Talents France for Women in Science prize in 2019.
Juan IMBET, DRM Finance laboratory, Université Paris Dauphine-PSL
Finance
Juan Imbet is a young researcher in Finance at Université Paris Dauphine-PSL, where he was recruited in September 2021 on the Tenure Track, after a PhD at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. His project is entitled “Offshore Finance, Welfare, Financial Stability and Regulation”, and he proposes to quantify the impact of the offshore finance industry on the well-being of investors and governments, and on financial stability.
Stéphane PERRARD, PMMH Finance laboratory, ESPCI Paris - PSL
Physics
Stéphane Perrard held a postdoctoral position at the Department of Physics at ENS - PSL from 2018 to 2021 (Junior Research Chair), then joined ESPCI Paris - PSL as a CNRS research fellow at the beginning of the year. He hopes to develop a research project that will provide a fundamental understanding of gas fragmentation in turbulent flows.
